Who is Hover and where did we come from?

1994: Tucows, and internet industry leader

Hover is a unit of Tucows. Tucows has been a recognized leader in the Internet industry since 1994, starting with our famous software downloads and reviews. Tucows was among the first ICANN accredited domain name registrar in 1999. Today, 10,000 service providers all around the world sell domain names that are managed by Tucows. Tucows manages over 9 million domain names.

1997: Hover begins as Domain Direct

Hover began as Domain Direct, Tucows’ first domain name service, in 1997. The mission was always to make domain name management simple. Back then, the key was one good fax machine with multiple phone lines.

2006 - 2007: Tucows acquires two more great doman name services

Tucows acquired NetIdentity in 2006 and It’s Your Domain in 2007. Both were successful domain name services. NetIdentity brought an exclusive collection of roughly 40,000 surname domains that allows us to offer our unique personal name email addresses.

2009: Hover launches

Tucows merged Domain Direct, NetIdentity and IYD, bringing the best services, tools and technology of each and re-launched as Hover in early 2009. Hover services over 150,000 customers. The Hover name and the hummingbird icon were chosen to represent the speed and effortlessness we bring to domain name management. It was also the shortest, coolest domain name we could grab.
